Re-Invention

You know, Ive been in business (well, self employed business) for 10 years now. Gosh that seems like a long time. Am I anywhere near where I thought I would be after doing this for 10 years? no way! However, I am happier, more content and less stressed than I was when I worked in corporate on a full time basis.

Anyway, I decided, I needed to go for a bit of reinvention - hence my dipping toes in the water last month with www.creurope.eu and using my coaching/mentoring skills. This month I decided to take another look at my business plan.

Yes, I know a lot of 'creatives' think you don't need a Business Plan. But you do - even if it's only 3 pages long. Heck, even if it's only ONE page long. I thought, as I now have another 'strand' to the Magic Key brand - I needed to think about this. Doing this also made me think about what I was doing and 'why' and how the two strands now needed to have different marketing policies.

I also realised I need to use my time wisely -or more effectively - which is a great way to make you realise how much time you 'waste' here and there.

I always think it's amazing how one little shift in perception can change the whole dynamic of what you are trying to do...so I'm on the look out this week for something along the lines of "Law of Attraction" which relates to what I have done today. It may be something big or it may be something small, but it will be something.

My newsletter also needs an overhaul. It's very pretty and I always pride myself on having something you can read in under 60 seconds - hence the name - The Magic Minute. Personally, I hate newsletters that ramble on, get to the point, people! So I devised a survey from those nice people at Survey Monkey Interesting to see how many people reply to those things, but feedback is always good and I've had some great suggestions already. If you feel like commenting on my newsletter or things you might like to say about coaching - please go ahead.

So, this months lesson. Take some time out and look at exactly what you are doing - after you have decided where you are going - it's a great feeling.

The Corporate World

A couple of things happened this week. Yes, it was a new year...I'm never a huge fan of New Years Eve. Yes I like to celebrate, but everyone is overpriced and it always takes forever to get anywhere or you can't get a cab. If you are popping round to a friend's house in a contained place - I'm cool. But to go into central london feels like a bit of a drag to me (maybe I'm just getting old!)

Anyway, my company - The Magic Key Partnership - had a birthday - it became 10 years old. I'm actually quite proud of that fact. I'm nowhere near world domination that I was expecting when I set it up all those years ago, but I have coached hundreds of people, I have retained and built my brand and I still make a profit. That means success to me.

The other thing that happened was: I got involved in some corporate training with my friend Angela Walker over at CR Europe.eu. We went into a mortgage company to talk about Advanced Collections Techniques. We were using some NLP and a bit more about the 'psychology' of collections. ie. use the right words and questions with the customer and you can a) get more information and b) collect more money.

Funnily enough, since I came out of the corporate world I made a very definite decision NOT to coach in that environment. I had worked in it for over 20 years and I was a bit bored to be honest. However, going back after 10 years just enabled a few of things to happen.

1. It was actually fun. It is an area I know a lot about and it all came back like riding a bike
2. I saw people I knew - and I could still remember their names - amazing
3. I got two new enquiries from the entertainment world that I had made no effort in getting

The morale of the story: it's OK to change direction - you can always go back to that path - it will still be there and sometimes it's good to stop pushing or putting your foot on the accelerator as things get attracted to you when you are vibrating at a different level.

Social media in general

As my blog will testify. I don't like blogging. Check out my Twitter page, and you'll have far more success. I am doing a presentation this week on Social Media. Now, I'm a life coach, I'm not a social media guru - but some people who don't use social media that much actually want to hear from a 'user' not a 'guru'. I can tell others what I do - and having worked out my own Strategy (after attending a presentation by a wonderful guru - Justine Priestly at www.reallybrightmedia.com) I came to realise that I think I filed it, rather than added it to the 'to do' list.

It was really useful actually to revisit the Strategy Plan and see what I was and what I wasn't doing. Like with any goal that you want to achieve, never be afraid to revise along the way. See where the resistance is, or has been and see if you need to change something.

I'm not a blogger, I don't really want to become a blogger, I'm far too immediate and 140 characters works great for me with Twitter, but I do think I could put more on here than I currently do. If I transport myself back to the school desk I think I've gone through the 'please see me' stage and I'm now at the 'must try harder' point.

I think my resistance is feeling a bit isolated on the blog, obviously if no one is reading it, that's kind of a given. But when I tweet and/or facebook I do get some interaction which is nice. Maybe I'm just too much of an attention seeker for blogging...hmmm interesting.

Anyway, I'm about to put in the calender to blog once a month. Let's see how we get on with that one.

On my return trip from Cannes the boarding at Nice was probably - no, strike that - definitely the worst on any flight. They were soooooo slow. Then I think they parked the airplane in the wrong place...duh! Anyway, once we were all ensconced on the actual thing the plane was chocca. Mind you, the one saving grace was the head steward who made some wonderful announcements over the tannoy. I had to quickly grab a piece of paper and write them down because I know I would forget them.

1. I would like to welcome you onboard this Easy Jet flight this evening and introduce you to our fabulous crew. At the back of the plane (not doing very much at all) is Nicola. Here comes Graham (almost at the middle of the plane but not quite) and Alex is by my side.

2. The cabin lights will shortly be dimmed for takeoff as normal flight practice. If you wish to continue reading - or you are afraid of the dark - please switch on the reading light above your head.

3. We are about to come through the cabin with refreshments. Please tender the exact money. As you know, we have just completed another flight and all those passengers stole all our change.

4. We are preparing for landing. Please note all your smokers will just have to bite your fingernails for just a little bit longer as you won't be able to smoke until outside the terminal building.

5. If you need to book a car rental, you should have done it with easy car. However, if you go now to Europe Car they will be happy to hike up their rates, just for you!

Brilliant.

p.s. beware if you take a packet of crisps on a plane, if you don't catch them quick enough the bag expands as you get higher with the pressure and you could end up with exploding crisps in your lap

Words to Avoid

But: Negates any words that are stated before it. This is an instant out. It’s a way of relieving expectations on yourself and often means you have an easy out if you need it.

Try: This presupposes failure. As Yoda said to Luke Sky Walker “Luke, there is no try, there is only do or not do”! Try means it's not going to happen!

If: “If” puts circumstances in control of your life and plans. It presupposes that you may not. It’s just another good excuse so you always have an out!

Might: It does nothing definite. It leaves options for you and your listener. Again it lets you decide later but is very vague.

Would Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen. How many friends do you know who are in the “would have”, “should have” state of life. It lets them have the excuse of not being in control of their lives.

Should Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen (and implies guilt.) If you should have why didn’t you?

Could Have: Past tense that draws attention to things that didn't actually happen but the person tries to take credit as if it did happen. “I/he/she could have been anything, they were better than such and such at school or when they were young.” Everyone knows someone with this story!

Can't: My pet hate! This word force’s the listener to focus on exactly the opposite of what you want. How many times do I hear people say they can’t then when corrected just do the thing they said they couldn’t.

Don't: The first rule of coaching/training is to go towards what you want to achieve not visualise what you do not want to happen. The moment you say to someone “Don’t do that” it presents to him or her the picture of what you do not want to occur. Our brains work by picturing what we can achieve and if you fill it with negative images you will achieve them. This is a classic mistake that parents make without knowing the damage of this linguistic error. Instead state the action that you want to occur!

Do you know the brain works by going towards what it can picture.
Its impossible to visualize not doing something. The only way to properly visualize not doing something is to actually find a picture for what you want to do and visualize that. Again you have to be positive and go towards positive images.
Every time you use words that are not positive you are negating your life. Learn to talk positively about yourself and others.

Building your own leads in the 'Creative Job Search' is a crucial part of your activity, so getting things right when it comes to networking is important.

Here's a valuable summary you would be wise to take note of.

NETWORKING MISAKES:

You wouldn't wear jeans to a job interview, but do you pay as much attention to job-hunting etiquette when networking? If you're approaching potential contacts in an offhand way, you may be putting them off entirely. Learn what the most common networking mistakes are so you don't have to make them.

Waiting Many people start networking only after they've lost their jobs. Effective networking means creating contacts and relationships while you're still employed.

Being Clueless If you're heading to a networking event, make sure you know why you're going. Do you want a job? If so, are you seeking something specific, or will anything do? Are you looking for contacts or a mentor to provide guidance? As soon as someone starts talking with you, you have to hold up your end of the conversation. If you don't know what you want, you can't do that.

Being Unprepared Thinking you know what you want is not the same as knowing it. Treat networking the same way you would an appearance at Carnegie Hall. Practice your pitch as well as your answers to questions about your career goals that might arise.

Forgetting Business Cards There is nothing more embarrassing than establishing a good relationship with someone, extracting a pledge of help and then searching around for a cocktail napkin to write on. While you're at it, spend a few extra bucks to print professional-looking cards on good-quality paper.

Using a Silly-Sounding Email Name Sure, your friends know you as "SexyMama4U" or "TimeForHemp," but when looking for work, stick to a serious email address, such as your real name.

Being Pompous While you're networking, you need to listen to what everyone else is saying. People help by offering advice. They are not interested in hearing how much you already know.

Monopolizing Someone's Time At a networking event, everyone wants to mingle. And if you're networking over the phone or by email, understand that the person you're speaking with has a life that extends beyond you.

Dressing Down Look sharp at networking events. Mind your manners, shake hands firmly, stand up straight, make eye contact and show respect in any way you can. A networking event can be a dress rehearsal for a job interview, but no one will help you get your foot in the door if you give the impression that you'll slouch through it once it's open.

Being a Wallflower Men and women with contacts and power meet many people; they remember only those who stand out from the crowd. Be assertive, and act like a leader. But don't go overboard. You want to convey self-assurance, not obnoxiousness.

Being Passive If someone says, "Sorry, we don't have anything right now," take a minute or two to ask follow-up questions: "Well, what's the outlook for future possibilities? Do you know anyone else in the industry who might have something? Any thoughts on what my next step should be?" Persistence shows true interest on your part and may help the person you're networking with come up with ideas he might otherwise overlook.

Lying It's tempting to say "So-and-So gave me your name, and told me to call." It might even get you a meeting. But eventually Such-and-Such will learn that So-and-So did not tell you to call. And you'll have burned not one, but two bridges.

Treating Your Networking Relationships as Short-Term Flings No one likes to be used. Follow up every conversation with a thank-you note, email or call. Let your contact know whether his suggestions panned out or not. When your job search ends -- for whatever reason -- inform the person who has helped you. You may think your networking is over, but your paths may cross again.

Forgetting Where You Came From Anyone who has ever networked, whether successfully or not, owes an obligation to all those who will network in the future. Return the favour and help someone else.

The 7 Key Principles to Stopping the Excuses

You may have read the blog on the top 18 Lame Excuses - I keep referring back to that myself when I hear myself saying things like "oh, I don't that I can afford that!"

Anyway, here are the principles to stopping the excuses - you need to keep these to hand also and practice them on a regular basis - or just give each one some focus each week - you will be amazed how you start to notice what you need to change -

1. AWARENESS
become very aware of yourself, your thoughts and your vocal patterns where they are negative or limiting. write them down if you need to, but just become very aware and open to all possibilities. get other people to pull you up when you are being negative

2. ALIGNMENT
you need to align yourself with the real you. do things you are happy about, not because you feel you 'should'. make sure you are using high energy to your advantage. again 'I don't have enough money' is misaligned because there is loads of money in the world - you just need to see it that way

3. NOW
ah yes, the power of now! forget about past and future, just do your best at any one given moment, that will stand you in good stead. you may be able to do 'better' at some other time, but honestly, you are always doing the best you can NOW

4. CONTEMPLATION
Yes, there are times when you need to contemplate, which is a bit more than 'thinking'it gets a bit closer to your soul and your real desires when you get contemplative. the sub-conscious will also send you information 'from nowhere'

5. WILLINGNESS
are you really really really willing? - to change - to take action - to move - to live life fully - to surrender to what lies ahead because you KNOW it's better?

6. PASSION
enthusiasm overcomes excuses, if you are really passionate, excuses don't even figure - if someone offered you a wonderful holiday for £50 but you had to be at the airport in one hour - how quickly would you pack?

7. COMPASSION
Never underestimate this one. don't be angry with others, they are doing the best they can. don't judge other people, how they behave is none of your business. random acts of kindness cost nothing. you know the saying 'I cursed my worn out shoes until I met a man with no feet' if you are down to your last 10p give it away, because another 10p can take its place very easily

..for not doing what you should! I love these and am adopting a few myself.

Here are some affirmations to use every day (Dr. Wayne Dyer: Stop the Excuses) and the pathetic excuses they will counter. Repeat as many times as you dare every morning and every evening before you sleep.

1. I have the ability to accomplish any task I set my mind to with ease and comfort
(It will be difficult)

2. Being myself involves no risks. It is my ultimate truth and I live it fearlessly
(It's going to be risky)

3. I have infinite patience when it comes to fulfilling my destiny
(It will take a long time)

4. I would rather be loathed for who I am than loved for who I am not
(There will be family/friend drama)

5. I am a divine creation, a piece of God. Therefore I cannot be undeserving

Storage

you know, when I moved house and 'downsized' I always wondered whether it was worth taking on a storage facility. I have to say, I love my lock up! It always amazes me when I go back and remember all the great things I have, that I can use again when I get back to a bigger property, the pics I can put on the walls, the stuff that I will have room for in the kitchen.

I went up yesterday as I have sold my personalised number plate and wanted to find the old plates to go back on the car. They weren't there..I was sure they were in a box, anyway, as it happens, I found them this morning, sitting on the floor of a cupboard in my house! That, aside I decided to bring back my blender which has been sitting in a box for 2 years. Now, why I thought this was a useless item, I can't quite remember, although I do have a vague recollection about trying to make carrot juice (which I don't think I would have liked anyway) and it not being able to do it. Once it was back in the kitchen yesterday I lobbed in some strawberries, two scoops of vanilla yoghurt, a splash of milk and a bit of water and am now addicted to making smoothies. ....delish or what???!!

I may even start proper cooking at this rate....

Synchronicity

...just a small musing about this topic. A couple of months back I had an email in my 'junk' box which said "well I never" in the title..it intrigued me, so I clicked on it. In the body of the message was just one word. The nickname that my ex-husband gave me! freaky, only because I have been divorced over 15 years and had no contact from him since that time. After a few line contact in email about 'how I was' he disappeared as quickly as he came.

This then got me to thinking about other exes (as you do). Today I found another email in my hotmail account from a name I did not recognise. It turned out to be my first long term boyfriend that I went out with 30 years ago, writing from his partners account.

What the universe is telling me about looking back, I'm not sure and I can't work out if it's nostalgia time, or if I'm stuck in a time warp. But a few moments just showing the power of the internet - or Friends Re united to be more precise - was quite interesting.

This year, in January, I wrote down my aims and achievements with deadlines for all. I love it when client's update me with their progress - often years after I have coached them. This came in recently from a guy who attended my workshops and then last year took my 8 Week Makeover Programme. Here's what he said:

Hi Lyn,

I though I would just drop you a line and let you know my progress.

-Head hunted for a role in the middle east with a wonderful package ...tax free.
-A publisher has shown a very strong interest in two books I am working on saying they are exactly what he is looking for.
-A director of major global technology company based in the US has asked for my help defining strategy, which is all a result of a bit of networking, which is something that we covered on a course I did with you a couple of years back.
-The president of Microsoft contacted me last night in response to something I had written and wants to discuss my thoughts.
-BT have given an agreement in principle to sell my companies service to its business customers such as Vodafone and Virgin.

and all in the past 24 hours

and on a personal level I have lost a stone and finally started guitar lessons.

So while I can't directly attribute this to your course, certainly taking the time to set goals and deciding to change my thinking has had potentially a life changing effect.

I was watching the Ian Dury play the other night (which was very good) and there was a quote “Imagination is more important than knowledge", which I have found out is Einstein - one of my personal heroes - but it is a very neat statement which sums up my philosophy which seems to be producing results.

You know, I'm not really a political animal, and I don't really have much time for people who bleat on about being hard done by (just because they are female) as I believe it's all about attitude, if you want something, go get it. However, I realise there are still areas where there is not equality in our pay system that probably do need addressing at some level.........Check this out:

It's nearly 40 years since pay discrimination was made illegal. Yet today women working full time are paid 17% less than men for work of equivalent value, and women working part-time are paid a whopping 36% less than men. Equal pay law is not working.

The Government's Equality Bill offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to end the gender pay gap. But the proposals being put forward are weak and will do little to dent the gap.

Join with UNISON and Fawcett in Parliament to call for tougher measures on equal pay:

Top Tips for Cannes

1. be prepared to go more than once - build up contacts as the first time you won't have a clue where to go but you have to get it over with
2. don't go for too long - go for max 5 days and always include the first weekend, things really tail off after that - even women can't talk for 2 weeks non stop - I've tried!
3. go and watch films - it gives you something to chat about, but don't be surprised when buyers walk out after 10 mins, if they watched the whole thing - they wouldn't have time to buy anything
4. Join the American Pavillion - it's big, it's loud, it's groovy, it's where people hang out, get fed and let's face it, easy to network - the yanks will talk to anyone
5. pop into the UK Council Pavillion - very knowledgeable and nice people - will give you scoop of what's on, go to Q&A and network afterwards, if they know about any parties they will tell you
6. for the ladies - sensible shoes ,take a brolly and the best loos are at the Majestic - you won't believe how much time you spending walking, yes it will rain and not a good look for that all important meeting and if you need a quick change into that cocktail dress the Majestic loos are perfect - huge and clean (never attempt this in a cubicle 3ft by 3ft ie. at the Grand)
7. take LOTS of business cards (and give them out) - exchange all the time and write details about the person you met on the back ie. hair colour, what you talked about. People you don't like, stick them in a different pocket or just leave them blank. Don't forget to follow up when you get home
8. go to a premier - it's SO worth getting up at stupid o'clock to queue at the Palais for your chance to get a ticket for the 7.00pm performance then walk up the red carpet as if you starred in the movie - I guarantee someone will take your picture - everyone looks so great and even the boys scrub up well....have you ever seen a man look naff in a tux?? exactly
9. avoid early morning appointments - especially if you've been on the sauce the night before, bleary eyes and furry tongue are not good components for a successful meeting
10. go to lots of parties - yes, there are lots and you should go to more than one a night, everyone does - don't miss the south african party it's a blast. Talk to as many people as possible. If you can't get an invite, simply wait until the rush is over at the start and then flirt with the bouncer to get in (guys, this may not work for you....)
11. don't forget to eat - you should be busy during the day so may only have time to grab a baguette but come 6.00pm when the free booze is flowing in the pavillions and then you get invited to a party - it can easily become midnight and you've got the munchies
12. get used to the time difference - no I don't mean the one hour - I mean Cannes time. Cocktail hour, party time and more party time and then Nikki Beach time- it all kicks off from 11.00pm so sleep is for wimps. Sleep when you come home (another reason not to go for 2 weeks)

well here it is, the first blog, well actually that's not quite true, I did set one up on MySpace many years ago....and then never did much with it. So here I am - going to do it again - and be MUCH better at it. Well I have a monthly newsletter that goes out, so if all else fails, at least there will be one thing a month.
